El gigante farmacéutico Gilead Sciences, fabricante de los cócteles de antirretrovirales más avanzados y usados para el tratamiento del VIH, como Atripla, Complera o Quad, ha anunciado que está comprometida en la búsqueda de una cura para la infección por VIH y que está investigando varias estrategias muy prometedoras.
Ante las dudas que muchos activistas y personas en general plantean sobre la conveniencia económica para las farmacéuticas de encontrar la cura para el VIH cuando son ellas las que ofrecen el tratamiento (de por vida), los directivos de Gilead afirman que a largo plazo para las farmacéuticas va a ser más rentable curar que tratar, ya que los tratamientos ya han alcanzado su máximo grado de perfeccionamiento. Además afirman que la cura del VIH es cuestión de tiempo y que el que la descubra primero tendrá miles de millones en ganancias.
Visto de esa manera, pues la verdad es que sí tiene sentido. La cura del VIH se ha convertido en los últimos años en el santo grial de la medicina del siglo XXI y el primero que la consiga podrá tener unas muy jugosas ganancias tomando en cuenta que en el mundo hay unos 36 millones de personas infectadas, de las cuales 14 millones están en países desarrollados o en vías de desarrollo.
Gilead, que sin duda es el líder en el mercado de antirretrovirales, afirma que ya cuenta con un medicamento aprobado por la FDA para el tratamiento de un tipo cáncer de piel, romidepsin (Istodax), que es capaz de reactivar los reservorios virales (células donde el virus permanece escondido y hacen que la infección no se pueda curar definitivamente). Y como si fuera poco también posee otro medicamente capaz de potenciar la acción de las céulas TCD8 o célular asesinas, las encargadas de eliminar otras células infectadas.
Los directivos y científicos de Gilead afirman que la combinación de estos dos agentes, junto con la terapia antirretroviral actual podrían eliminar la infección y remover los reservorios virales en 2 o 3 años de tratamiento, pudiendo alcanzar una cura al menos funcional.
En pocos meses empezarán los ensayos clínicos en humanos para probar estas estrategias y si todo sale bien, una terapia curativa podría estar disponible en 3 o 4 años.
Sin duda son buenas noticias, que se suman a la lista de grandes avances que se vienen dando en estos últimos años, pero una vez más, habrá que esperar con paciencia los resultados.
